A day in the life of Glasgow Sales Assistant, Julie Laing

We caught up with Julie Laing, who has been a Sales Assistant at our Glasgow store for one year and loves it!

Can you describe a typical day at McGowans?

My day starts with putting the diamond and gemset jewellery out on display whilst setting up window displays and ensuring the store is spotless and inviting to customers for the day ahead. I will then check the repairs to see if there are any jobs due or orders due in.

What part of working at McGowans do you enjoy most?

What I love about McGowans is that every day is different!

I have met some very interesting people that all have a different story to tell. It could be a family item that’s been passed down, or a special piece of jewellery that the customer needs repair advice on. This could span from replacing stones or re-tipping the claws of a piece, especially if it’s an older claw-set ring.

Jewellery to me is very special, it symbolises special moments in life, remembrance and love.

Another part I truly enjoy within my role at McGowans has to be the team I work in.

I have made some very good friends and we are like a little ‘work family’. I am fortunate to work with people that have over 30 years experience in the trade, so I am always learning from them.

I am also very passionate about gemstones and secondhand jewellery. I love the uniqueness of antique jewellery,  and Art Deco would have to be my favourite era for jewellery. I am currently working on my JET 2 Jewellery qualification to help improve my jewellery knowledge and skills which will then help to enhance customer’s experience in store.

Who or what keeps you motivated?

I keep myself motivated by always giving the best customer experience possbile. I particularly find that customer consultations are very rewarding and it’s truly special to be part of these. Customers buy special items for special moments in life, and we are honoured that they choose McGowans to be a part of these.

How do you challenge yourself in your role?

I challenge myself to always be learning something new, whether it’s chemical compounds of gemstones, history relating to hallmarking, different mines used for different gemstones or learning the history of older antique pieces. This helps us to provide the very best service we can to each and every customer.

What do you enjoy in your spare time?

In my spare time I like to socialise with friends whilst catching up over food as I’m a real foodie! I also enjoy cooking for friends when they are over to visit. I have 3 cats so they keep me quite busy in the evenings with their shenanigans!

What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in the jewellery industry?

I would say to anyone thinking of a career in jewellery to go for it! I have always loved jewellery, especially the older pieces. It’s so rewarding as well, finding a customer the perfect piece of jewellery is so rewarding, especially if it’s for a special occasion or precious moment they want to symbolise such as an engagement or milestone anniversary.
