Once upon a time, a beautiful green stone was discovered. The mesmerising colour of emerald is not the only thing captivating about the May birthstone. With a history full of tales, emerald is a mysterious gemstone with quite a few legends to tell. Here are some of our favourite myths and legends about emerald, from all over the world.
The stone of Venus
In ancient times, emerald was connected to Venus, the goddess of love, beauty and prosperity, and one of the pillars of mythology. Because of its association with the goddess and its symbols, emerald represented (and still does to this day) love and good fortune, as well as prosperity in romantic relationships.
Astral energy
In Hindu astrology, Emerald is linked to Mercury, the most powerful planet in astrology. The powers held by emerald are said to counter against any negative influence Mercury could have on the human mind and body. The benefits of emerald in astrology are love, protection, enhanced creativity and emotion, intelligence, confidence and eloquence. Some ascendants will benefit from wearing emerald more than others, such as Gemini, Taurus, and Virgo; whilst some ascendants are advised to stay away from the stone, such as Aries, Sagittarius and Scorpio.
Fit for a Queen
One of the most important figures of history was said to never be seen without her emeralds. No other than Cleopatra, the captivating Egyptian queen adored emeralds and stories of her emerald jewellery collection have fascinated many. Cleopatra and Egyptians believed in the healing powers of emerald on the living but also in the powers they held in the afterlife and buried their dead with emeralds for protection and guidance in rebirth.
A magical mystery
In the early Middle Ages, beliefs of magic were attached to emerald. The stone was said to be an antidote to break a spell and undo enchantments. Emerald was also believed to have the ability to reveal truth and falsehood, as well as foretell the future if placed on the tongue.
