A day in the life of Aberdeen Sales Assistant, Sheila Reed

We recently caught up with Sheila Reed, our Sales Assistant from our Aberdeen store. Sheila has been with us for four years.

Can you describe a typical day at McGowans?

Firstly, once we open I check the windows – I dress them to make sure all our items are neat and straight.  I will tend to any customer that enters our branch or will welcome them whilst they look in our windows.  I am responsible for ensuring the silver is perfectly polished and that all our stationary such as item boxes and jewellery bags are topped up.  I will complete any tasks that are asked of me from the morning briefing.

What part of working at McGowans do you enjoy most?

I love helping our customers especially buying jewellery. I’m a bubbly and chatty person who loves jewellery and I think this shows when showing our customers our fantastic stock.  Our jewellery changes all the time so we see new and unusual pieces all the time which I love.  I also enjoy seeing the completion of repairs as our jewellery is fantastic and sometimes brings our customers to tears with the amazing transformations.

Who or what keeps you motivated?

I am a very motivated person, not only in helping all our customers no matter what the enquiry, but also keeping our impeccable standards set.  I like expanding my knowledge on gemstones that are unusual or rare that we get in our branch from time to time.

What is the most challenging aspect of your role?

The most challenging part is when we have quiet days which happens every so often, but we put a line through the day and look forward to the next.  Every customer is different but always enjoyable.

How do you enjoy your spare time?

I enjoy baby sitting my grandson Arron who is three in my spare time, as family is very Important.  When I don’t have Arron I like to catch up with friends for lunch dates.  I enjoy swimming for exercise and long walks.  Gardening and travelling is something I really enjoy doing.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in the jewellery industry?

I have worked in retail for 43 years and working with jewellery is by far the best and most rewarding.  If you like one-to-one consultations with meaning, jewellery is for you. You get to work with gorgeous products and be part of something special for each customer.
