Antique and vintage jewellery offers something truly unique. Unlike new jewellery, it holds a very special story of its own, often full of sentiment and character. Buying antique and vintage jewellery is starting the next chapter of its life, whilst adding your own memories to its story. If you are considering investing in it, there are a number of things you should consider first, which we have outlined below. This guide should hopefully help you find the ideal piece for you!
Have an open mind
Unless you know exactly what you are looking for, it is worth having an open mind when shopping for antique and vintage jewellery. There are so many special pieces out there, so why limit yourself to only one type or style? From Victorian to Georgian and Edwardian to Art Deco, we have a wide range of interesting and unique jewellery at McGowans, each with their own special story to tell. Let our team guide you through our vast collection, and you will surely discover a very interesting piece suited to your own taste and budget.
Get up close
Antique and vintage jewellery often has very unique features and elements that make it one-of-a-kind. Quite often, these can be very small markings or stones that make the piece distinct and special. Get up close to the piece you are considering buying, consider all of its angles and markings and ask the retailer about it, you may even uncover some very interesting stories. For example, we currently have a beautiful 14k 5 Stone Diamond & Pearl Memory Bangle, which features fine black enamel, signifying that it has been in memory of a loved one passing and has then been carried on through generations (pictured below).
Check for markings
Most antique jewellery will have a marking on it from the maker of the piece, which can give some insight into its history. Our team in store will be able to talk you through these markings and eras. Markings vary widely, they can be dates, letters, ‘maker’s marks’ or symbols. Common marks include gold/silver purity marks which detail the karat or sterling of the jewellery, and different countries often have their own Assay Marks as well as makers leaving their own logos and signature stamps. This can be a very interesting part of shopping for antique jewellery, as you begin to discover more about the maker and the time it was created. It is certainly one of our favourite parts of the job! We love understanding the stories of this special jewellery and finding their new owners to start their next chapter!
Wear and tear
It is worthwhile keeping in mind that vintage and antique jewellery has often been passed through the hands of multiple owners over the decades, and it should show signs of wear and tear. We take the upmost care when it comes to restoring antique and vintage pieces, however wear and tear is absolutely normal and should be expected when it comes to this type of jewellery. If it looks pristine and brand new, it may not be all as it seems. Check prongs, hooks and clasps to see if they show signs of wear, if not – question why. Yes, elements may have been replaced to keep the piece looking its best, however it is advised to be cautious and ask lots of questions. Our knowledgeable team will be able to talk you through the features of a piece so you know exactly what you’re investing in.
