We caught up with Rhona, who has been a Sales Assistant at our Aberdeen store since it opened almost four years ago!
Can you describe a typical day at McGowans?
I start each day dressing the window displays and ensuring they are all straight, neat and tidy which is something I am very passionate about. Once we are open and I’ve completely checked over the windows and house-keeping of the store, we check the daily diary and have a brief on what we need to achieve for the day and of course I look forward to helping and serving our clients the most. I am responsible for checking over any repairs in store both leaving to our jeweller and once the job is complete.
What part of working at McGowans do you enjoy most?
I love every part of my role, but if I had to pick one it would be the satisfaction I get when helping a client with a purchase or repair. The jewellery we have is of a very high quality and some of our reconditioned/antique pieces are unusual and one offs. I feel very privileged to work with such beautiful items.
Who or what keeps you motivated?
My team in Aberdeen and our colleagues in Glasgow are great and we all work together really well and keep each other motivated to achieve the same goals. We all advise and help each other with all aspects of our day to day job.
What is the most challenging aspect of your role?
I like a challenge and keeping up to date with training and new things in jewellery is something I really enjoy doing to ensure I have the best knowledge for my clients.
What do you enjoy in your spare time?
In my own time, I enjoy socialising and listening to live music. I am a sun worshiper and look forward to holidays abroad. My daughter Jodie who also works at McGowans Aberdeen is expecting her first child, a baby girl, and my first grandchild and I cannot wait to become a grandma and the joy she will bring to my life.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to work in the jewellery industry?
I have worked in various retail businesses for many years. Jewellery has to be my favourite. Jewellery is a luxurious product to sell and if you like to learn a tremendous amount about what you sell then jewellery is for you as the training and knowledge is always exceptional. If you get the chance take it you will not regret it.
