Some of our Favourite Gemstones for 2022

Three months into the new year and we are now fully embracing the jewellery trends 2022 has to offer. Whether this is rings, earrings, pendants or wristwear, one trend that has particularly stood out is gemstone jewellery. Emeralds, Diamonds, Rubies and Sapphire, just to name a few, can be used as statement pieces or for everyday wear.

Here at McGowans, our team is always on hand to talk you through the different gemstones and find you something that suits your needs and requirements.

Gemstone Rings

We have seen a huge increase in the popularity of gemstone engagement rings; however, they don’t always have to be used for getting married. They each symbolise different wedding anniversaries and birthstones and make great gifts for these very occasions. Their colourful and bold styles make them great for celebrating significant milestones or events like career successes or the birth of a child too. If you have ever been tempted to buy a gemstone ring, now is definitely the time to treat yourself or the ones you love!

Gemstone Pendants and Gemstone Earrings

As the closest pieces of jewellery to eye-level, they are often the first thing people notice on you when they meet you. They are timeless pieces that make a staple in your jewellery collection. Coming in a variety of different styles and sizes, gemstone pendants and earrings can make a brilliant statement piece or be added as a simplistic accessory depending on the occasion. We are seeing a lot of matching pendants and earring sets being sold together to complement each other when worn together.

Diamonds

‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friend’, and probably why they are also commonly used for proposals, as 10th wedding anniversary gift and April’s birthstone! They are historically known to symbolise inner strength, reliability and sparkle due to their immense durability. Their simplistic, elegant nature makes them perfect for dressing outfits up, or for wearing as an accessory complimenting day-to-day outfits. Have a look at a selection of our Diamond pieces here or come into our Argyll Arcade stores in Glasgow to see our full collection of diamond jewellery.

Emeralds

Emeralds are a rare find and are popular due to their unique, rich green colour. They are most commonly used to celebrate 55th wedding anniversaries and are the beautiful birthstone of May. They symbolise value and rarity and were Cleopatra’s favourite gemstone! With May birthday’s not far away, now is the perfect time to explore our Emerald jewellery collection. From Emerald earrings to Emerald rings and pendants, we have something for everything in the Argyll Arcade, Glasgow.

Sapphire

Did you know that Sapphires are amongst the most durable elements in the world? The most valuable Sapphires have a much deeper blue tone to them making them very rare to find. This is why, historically, royalty gave Sapphires as engagement rings as they are far rarer than Diamonds to find. They are so sought after they are used to celebrate 5th, 45th and 75th wedding anniversaries. If you are lucky enough to have a September birthday, you will also have a Sapphire as your birthstone. Their beautiful blue colours look great on any piece of jewellery. Take a look at our Sapphire collection online or visit us in our Argyll Arcade, Glasgow locations.

Ruby

Rubies are used to celebrate the 40th wedding anniversaries and are the birthstone of July. They are commonly associated with the sun as the sun’s UV rays make the chromium in Rubie’s sparkle and shine, revealing a strong red fluorescence. They symbolise nobility, purity and passion and are valued by cultures around the world. At McGowans Jewellers, we have a great selection of gorgeous Ruby pieces, some at amazing promotional prices. Take a look online, or come into the Argyll Arcade to have a look at our full Ruby jewellery collection.

Amethyst

Amethyst gemstones are said to be a natural stress reliever bringing calming energies to the one wearing them. They possess a wonderful purple colour and were very popular amongst ancient royalty. While with Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, Cleopatra also famously wore an amethyst ring which made it a popular piece among the Roman ladies. Amethysts are commonly used to celebrate the 6th wedding anniversary and are the birthstone of February. We have a selection of beautiful Amethyst jewellery pieces online and in-store in our Argyll Arcade Jewellery stores. Come along and have a look for yourself!

Pearl

As the only gemstone that is not extracted from the earth, Pearl’s are unique. They are extracted from a living creature in the sea and don’t require any extra polishing or cutting like other gemstones. Like diamonds, however, the more flawless the Pearl is, the higher its quality and the more valuable it is. It is now believed that only around 1% of pearls used in jewellery today are actually natural, with the rest being cultivated in a lab. Pearls are used to celebrate the 30th wedding anniversary and are the birthstone of June. Like a lot of our gemstone jewellery, you can find a selection of pieces online or our full collection in store in the Argyll Arcade, Glasgow.

Blue Topaz

Blue Topaz is a beautiful blue gemstone that is used to celebrate the 4th and 19th wedding anniversaries. It is also the birthstone of December and symbolises faithfulness and loyalty and is commonly used by healers to fix cracks in relationships. Historically, due to its cooling blue colour, it was known to have cooling properties and was used to soothe burns and cool down boiling water! Along with our other gemstone jewellery pieces, we have a large selection of Blue Topaz rings, earrings and more online, with our full collection available to see in our Argyll Arcade stores in Glasgow.
